Last week, 10 of our FFA members attended the 96th FFA National Convention & Expo in Indianapolis, Indiana from October 31st through November 4th. At this year's convention, over 73,000 members and guests convened to gain premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through fellowship with members from around the country. Members attended general sessions at Lucas Oil Stadium, visited the Career Expo to gain college and career contacts, and honed their leadership skills in Career and Leadership Development Events. As winners of the North Carolina FFA State contests in Parliamentary Procedure and Horse Evaluation, students of the Southern Nash FFA Chapter attended to compete at the National Contests held at the Convention. Southern Nash FFA was also honored in the National Chapter awards program.
The National FFA Parliamentary Procedure LDE tests students' ability to effectively communicate ideas during a meeting. Components included a general knowledge exam of parliamentary law, a 10 minute demonstration of parliamentary procedure, oral questions, written minutes of the demonstration as well as a team problem solving activity. Each team competed on local and state levels to earn the privilege of representing their state at the National FFA Convention & Expo. The Southern Nash FFA Parliamentary Procedure Team earned a Bronze Emblem for their demonstration. Team members were Caleb Bissette, Kimber Bissette, Dustin Gibbs, Natalie Messer, Brayden Moore, and Savannah Wood.
Students who participate in the National FFA Horse Evaluation Career Development Event (CDE) gain new insights into equine science by evaluating and ranking horses based on breed characteristics, conformation and performance. Participants defend their decisions through oral reasons in front of a panel of judges. In this team CDE, students solve problems related to everything from the nutrition and reproduction of horses to the tack/equipment and feed used to care for horses. Participants strengthen their leadership, observation, analysis, critical thinking and communication skills while also developing and exercising a competitive team spirit and building an awareness of career opportunities within the equine industry. Participants were Hannah Mennig, Bryleigh Colbert, Mercedes Ledbetter, and Cade Edwards. The Southern Nash FFA Horse Evaluation team earned a Gold Emblem and placed 6th in the nation. Bryleigh Colbert earned 3rd top placing individual in the nation, and Hannah Mennig earned 2nd top placing individual in the nation. These members were recognized on stage at the 7th General Session of the convention, held at Lucas Oil Stadium.
The National Chapter Award Program is designed to recognize FFA chapters that actively implement the mission and strategies of the organization. These chapters improve chapter operations using the National Quality Chapter Standards (NQCS) and a Program of Activities (POA) that emphasize growing leaders, building communities and strengthening agriculture. Chapters are rewarded for providing educational experiences for the entire membership. The Southern Nash FFA Chapter was honored to receive the prestigious National FFA 2-star rating.
The success of the Southern Nash FFA Chapter at the 96th FFA National Convention would not have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors. Sponsors were Nash County Farm Bureau, Southern Nash FFA Alumni, Gerald and Renee Jones, Pete & Betsy Cone, Vandemark Farms, Trevor Vandemark, Quality Preowned Inc., JRs Maintenance Service, Southern Nash Septic Systems, Dutch Farms, Brushed & Blushed, Bonita Davis, Georgia Brown, Jones Family Farms, Master Builders & Renovators Inc., Specialty Oxygen Partners LLC, Cordiform Coffee, Medlin Buick, Ridgeway Realty, and High Farms. A special thank you to Nash County Public Schools Career & Technical Education and Southern Nash High School for their support.
