Ms. Sonya Horton- Principal
It is an honor and a privilege to serve as the Principal of Southern Nash High School. This year marks my 20th year in education and my 12th year in school administration, and I am incredibly grateful for the experiences, relationships, and opportunities that have shaped my journey as an educator and leader.
Southern Nash High School holds a very special place in my heart. I previously served as an Assistant Principal at SNHS for a year and a half before transitioning to serve as Principal of Southern Nash Middle School for the past three years. My time at Southern Nash Middle School was incredibly meaningful, and I am proud of all that we accomplished together.
Now, I am excited to return to Southern Nash High School and to be back home as a Firebird! I look forward to building on the strong traditions of our school while continuing to create opportunities for every student to learn, grow, and succeed.
My commitment remains the same: put students first, support our staff, partner with our families, and work together to make Southern Nash High School a place where everyone feels valued, supported, and inspired to reach their full potential.
I am excited about the year ahead and all that we will accomplish together. Once a Firebird, always a Firebird! Love Southern, Live ALL IN!
Mrs. April Watson - Assistant Principal
With 23 years of experience in education and administration, I am proud to serve students, staff, and families in my community. I'm a Nash County native and graduate of Northern Nash High School. I have taught CTE at several schools in our district! I also taught at SNMS during my teaching career. I have a deep connection to the community I serve and it feels like HOME! I earned my undergraduate degree from Elizabeth City State University. I completed my Masters in Administration at Gardner Webb University.
I am passionate about helping students and staff navigate their educational journey and find success along the way. I am honored to be part of the Firebird community, where we believe in being “ALL IN”—all in for our students, our staff, and our school community!
Mr. Robert Harvey - Assistant Principal
Mr. Harvey has 22 years of experience in Education. He was educated and raised in Greenville, North Carolina. Mr. Harvey is a graduate of J.H. Rose High School. He continued his education at Winston Salem state University where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in History in 2001. In 2012 Mr. Harvey received his Masters degree in School Administration from North Carolina Central University. Mr. Harvey worked in WIlson County Schools for 20 years where he served as an Assistant Principal (5 years at Elm City Middle and 1 year at Hunt High School). Mr. Harvey became the Director of Transportation for Wilson County Schools in 2015. In 2022 Mr. Harvey transitioned to Human Resources as the Director of Classified Personnel. Mr. Harvey returned to a school setting in 2023 due to his desire to help students succeed. Mr. Harvey is excited to be part of the Firebird family.
Mr. Elbert Maynard- Assistant Principal
Mr. Maynard grew up in Michigan (Go Blue!) and then attended Marshall University for 3 years before transferring to Fayetteville State University and earning a degree in English Education. He taught English, AP English and Journalism at Douglas Byrd High School in Fayetteville, NC, and then returned to Fayetteville State University to obtain a Master's degree in English. He taught English at Mattamuskeet Early College High School in Swan Quarter and West Craven High School in Vanceboro before being accepted into the Principal Fellow's program through East Carolina University, where he received his Master's degree in School Administration and Curriculum and Instruction. He then joined Nash County by working as an assistant principal at Rocky Mount High School in 2016 and served there for 6 years before becoming principal of Nash Everywhere Digital Academy. After two years at NEDA, Mr. Maynard has come to Southern Nash High to join the Firebird family!
